from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jean de Bourbon , more correctly: Jean Bâtard de Bourbon (* before 1434; † December 2, 1485 in the monastery Rembert-en-Forez ) was abbot of Cluny from 1456 to 1480. He was an illegitimate son of Duke Jean I of Bourbon ; his mother's name is not known.

In 1439 he became abbot of Saint-André-lez-Avignon and in 1443 bishop of Le Puy-en-Velay . In 1446 he became administrator of the Archdiocese of Lyon . In 1456 he received the title of Count of Velay , in the same year he became Abbot of Cluny. In this office he tried to involve Cluny in the reform movement, which began to develop in the second half of the 15th century, and thereby ensure compliance with the rules in the monastery. Strong resistance limited its success to Burgundy and Franche-Comté . He resigned as abbot in 1480.

Jean de Bourbon is the builder of the Chapelle de Bourbon in Cluny, but above all the founder of the Hôtels de Cluny in Paris . He was buried in Cluny Abbey.
