Neutral Milk Hotel is an American indie rock band. The group around singer and songwriter Jeff Mangum released two albums and two EPs in the 1990s. Mangum himself once described the band's style as fuzz folk . Their music influenced a number of bands such as Arcade Fire and The Decemberists .

history

The group developed from the musician collective Elephant Six . Neutral Milk Hotel released their first album, On Avery Island , in 1996 on Merge Records .

The band gained greater prominence through the album In the Airplane Over the Sea (1998), which was critically acclaimed and is often regarded as a classic of indie rock. After the album sold consistently well and was difficult to get at times, it was re-released by Domino Records in 2005 .

After the album was released and a year of extensive touring, Jeff Mangum withdrew from the public. Most of the members of Neutral Milk Hotel, who never officially dissolved, continued to work together on other projects. Since 2010 Mangum has had a few solo appearances in which he also played songs from the band.

In April 2013, Neutral Milk Hotel announced their reunion for an autumn tour that same year.
