Heinz Mehlhorn

Heinz Mehlhorn (born September 30, 1944 in Aussig , Sudetenland ) is a German zoologist and parasitologist .

Life

Heinz Mehlhorn was 1944 in Usti nad Labem, which today to the Czech Republic belonging nad Labem Ústí born. He studied biology , German and chemistry for teaching at the University of Bonn and graduated in 1969 with the state examination. In 1971 he did his doctorate in the field of biology / parasitology under Professor Gerhard Piekarski in Bonn on the life cycle and control of the chicken parasite Eimeria maxima . In 1972 he worked as a university assistant in France and the USA.

In 1974 he accepted a position at the University of Düsseldorf . As an assistant to Werner Peters , he completed his habilitation there in 1975 on East Coast fever in cattle. In 1977 he was appointed professor and scientific advisor at the Zoological Institute II at the University of Düsseldorf. In 1983 he was offered a professorship at the Ruhr University in Bochum , where he held the chair for special zoology and parasitology. In 1987 he was visiting professor in Japan. In 1995 he moved back to Düsseldorf as a C4 professor and became institute director of Zoology II at Heinrich Heine University. In 2009, he retired there.

Act

Heinz Mehlhorn's main fields of work are studies of the fine structure and life cycles of parasitic organisms and the development of drugs against parasites . He wrote 15 books in four languages, wrote over 170 other specialist publications and developed 20 patents for new drugs against parasites.

In 2001 he was appointed to the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts .
