Johannes Grüntzig

Johannes W. Grüntzig (born December 24, 1937 in Dresden ) is a German ophthalmologist.

Life

He attended the Thomas School in Leipzig and learned in Buenos Aires . He then studied ethnology , medicine and tropical medicine at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg . From 1964 to 1965 he conducted a field study on indigenous people in Mexico .

After obtaining his license to practice medicine, he worked as an assistant at the Institute for Social Medicine at the Hannover Medical School . He was chief medical officer in the ergonomics department of the Naval Medical Institute of the Navy . In 1975 he made the film Loa loa in Cameroon . He conducted research on eye diseases in Burkina Faso, Guatemala, Honduras, India, Indonesia, Liberia, Mexico and Thailand. Lecture tours have taken him to El Salvador, Indonesia, Canada and the USA. Together with Heinz Mehlhorn , he publishes the books Expeditions into the Empire of Epidemics and Robert Koch . Grüntzig is professor of ophthalmology at Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf .

He is the brother of Andreas Roland Grüntzig .
