The Naval Medical Institute of the Navy ( SchiffMedInstM , also SMIM ) in Kiel - Kronshagen is the central specialist facility for all medical officers in the German Navy . In addition to the marine medical competence for the fleet, diving medicine also provides services for the entire Bundeswehr .

The institute is to move to Hamburg in 2023 to a new building on the premises of the Hamburg Armed Forces Hospital.

history

The Naval Medical Institute of the Navy was founded on January 2, 1961 under the name Uboots - and Diver Physiological Institute of the Navy (UTPIM) with headquarters in the medical area of ​​the Technical Naval School I. The agency has had its current name since May 1, 1965. The agency has been located on the site of the former naval hospital since August 1961. With the transformation of the Bundeswehr and the associated restructuring of the naval medical service, the management of the troops was again transferred to the head of the naval office .

Since October 1, 2012, it has been subordinate to the Head of the Marine Medical Department and Admiralty Doctor of the Navy in the Marine Command in Rostock .

tasks

Today the range of services includes the entire maritime medicine . These include occupational and environmental medicine on board, shipping medicine , maritime medical ergonomics , marine psychology as well as diving and hyperbaric medicine .

The institute has one of the most modern pressure chamber systems in Europe . The Institute will ship and diving medical training for all branches of the armed forces carried out the armed forces. For the completed ship doctor training, the participants receive the certificate maritime medicine , which has been a prerequisite for employment as a ship doctor in the German Navy since June 6, 2001 , but is also open to all non-Bundeswehr members. Scientific work in the areas of shipping, diving and hyperbaric medicine, occupational medicine, ergonomics, performance and nutritional physiology on board and maritime psychology is carried out in close cooperation with the Universities of Kiel and Lübeck . The institute also carries out examinations, assessments, treatments and aptitude tests.
