Jeremy Max "Jem" Finer (born July 20, 1955 in Stoke-on-Trent / England ) is an English musician , actor and songwriter . He is a founding member of the Irish-English folk-punk band The Pogues .

life and career

Finer was born in Stoke-on-Trent, England and studied computer science and sociology at Keele University . After his studies, he traveled through Europe and worked briefly on a barge in France . Finer eventually settled in London . He lived in a house on 32Burton Street, which he temporarily shared with Shane MacGowan and Spider Stacy , and which eventually formed the Pogues with them .

Mainly on the banjo , Finer also plays mandolin , saxophone and guitar, among other things .

Apart from Shane MacGowan (with whom he wrote numerous songs, including Fairytale of New York ) Finer was the hardest-working songwriter of the Pogues. In an interview by Joe Strummer , Finer was referred to as the Bill Wyman of the group, without whom everything would drift apart uncontrollably. His testimony was confirmed in July 1996 when Jem left the Pogues and the group disbanded shortly thereafter.

He was involved in all of the Pogues' albums until they were dissolved. During this time he also appeared on MacGowan's solo album The Snake and with the band The Levellers . After the Pogues dissolved, Finer continued to work as a musician and songwriter .

The long player project he composed started on January 1, 2000 and - if everything goes as expected - will play for 1000 years without repeating itself.

In July 2005, Finer won the PRS Foundation New Music Award .

Finer and Swamp Rock legend DM Bob released the album Bum Steer together under the name DM Bob & Country Jem in 2005 and also perform regularly together.

Finer is also artistically active. One of his sculptures can be seen on the King's Wood Sculpture Trail near Challock in Kent .

His latest project - called Fried Egg - is a spherical camera based on Finer's innovative 360 ° projection system.
