Jenő Rejtő (born Jenő Reich March 29, 1905 in Budapest , Austria-Hungary ; died January 1, 1943 in Jevdokovo , Soviet Union ) was a Hungarian writer.

He also wrote under the pseudonyms P. Howard and Gibson Lavery .

Life

Jenő Rejtő magyarized his family name. Rejtő broke off his acting training at the age of nineteen, left home and experienced adventures among packers, fishermen, sailors and circus people in half of Europe ( Berlin , Paris , Marseille , Lyon , Vienna and Zurich ). On his return he first wrote plays and had success with the operetta Wer daragen, wins . He became known for his novels, which he published under the pseudonyms P. Howard and Gibson Lavery .

His books parody crime stories, westerns, and adventure novels. They play around the world, often on the high seas or the Foreign Legion, and are characterized by running gags, bizarre characters and Rejtö's typical crazy humor.

During the Second World War, Rejtő was already seriously ill from the hospital by the Horthy regime and forced to work in the part of the Soviet Union occupied by the Axis powers and died in the camp on New Year's Day 1943. He is one of the most popular writers in Hungary . Rejtő wrote around 50 novels that have been translated worldwide. Six of his books were published in German.

German book editions

The number of German translations is still fairly manageable compared to the total number of Rejtő's books. The fact that the Hungarian novel Piszkos Fred, a kapitány has already been translated twice into German may illustrate the problem: The humor in Rejtő's books is largely based on a pun that is very difficult to translate into foreign languages. So is called z. B. the figure who, because of her grin, which extends from one ear to the other, in the original "Fülig Jimmy". In Nicolas Patakys translation (1985) it was given the rather ridiculously cumbersome name "up to the ears Jimmy". Vilmos Csernohorszky jr., Who initially published under the pseudonym Anna von Lindt, broke away from the Hungarian original in 2004 and found the German counterpart "Jimmy Reeperbahn" in order to better capture the spirit of the story.

The first German translations appeared in Hungary and the GDR in the 1960s and 1970s . In 2004, the Berlin-based Elfenbein Verlag took on the adventure parodies Rejtős, which appear there under his historical pseudonym "P. Howard".
