Jenny Hval , formerly known under the stage name Rockettothesky , (born July 11, 1980 in Oslo ) is a Norwegian singer , composer , songwriter and author .

Life

Hval studied at the University of Melbourne in Australia , the subjects Creative Writing and Performance . During her studies in Australia, she performed as a singer from 2003 with the Australian groups iPanic and Folding for Air . After her return to Norway her first EP Cigars came out in 2006 , which was nominated for the category Best Newcomer of the Norwegian Spellemann Prize. Here she was already using the stage name Rockettothesky . In the same year the CD To Sing You Apple Trees followed and in 2008 Medea . In 2010 her novel Perlebryggeriet was nominated for the Sørlandets literaturpris .

Hval has been using her maiden name since 2011 and released the albums Viscera and Innocence Is Kinky on Rune Grammofon . In collaboration with her partner Håvard Volden , the CD was released in 2012 with the title Nude on Sand she had chosen . Together, Hval and Volden, who live in the Oslo district of Grønland , also founded the independent label Meddle Records .

Hval worked with Susanna Wallumrød on sound installations and the joint album Meshes of Voice , which was released in late summer 2014. The album of the two was awarded the Spellemann Prize in the Open Class in the year of publication .

During a six month stay in New York City , Jenny Hval toured the United States and Great Britain with noise rock band Swans in the summer of 2014 .

In addition to her work as a musician, Hval publishes texts in magazines, edited volumes and CDs and is a freelance author and columnist. So far, two books by her have appeared in Norway.
