Jens Hillje

Jens Hillje (* 1968 ) is a German dramaturge and was co-director of the Maxim Gorki Theater in Berlin from 2013 to 2019 .

Live and act

He grew up in Italy and Lower Bavaria. After studying applied cultural studies in Perugia , Hildesheim and Berlin , he has been working in the independent theater scene as an actor, author and director since 1990. In 1996 he moved to Berlin and founded the barracks at the Deutsches Theater with the director Thomas Ostermeier , which two years later was voted Theater of the Year. From 1999 to 2009 he was a member of the artistic direction and chief dramaturge of the Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz . Together with Thomas Ostermeier and Sasha Waltz , he built up an international acting and dance ensemble there. At the Schaubühne he co-founded the format "FIND - Festival Internationale Neue Dramatik", which has been taking place there every year since 1999/2000.

As a dramaturge he worked with the directors Barbara Frey , Luk Perceval , Yael Ronen and Sebastian Nübling , among others . In 2000 he began a continuous collaboration at the Schaubühne with the director and author Falk Richter , which Jens Hillje continued as a freelance dramaturge after 2009, for example in Trust (Schaubühne Berlin, 2009), My secret garden ( Festival d'Avignon , 2010) or Rausch (Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus, 2012). At the Gorki Theater, he and Falk Richter developed the highly acclaimed production Small Town Boy . Together with Nurkan Erpulat , he developed the play Verrücktes Blut at Ballhaus Naunynstraße in 2010 , which in 2011 was voted “Play of the Year” by the specialist magazine Theater heute . In the same year Hillje curated the performing arts festival “Intransit” as artistic director at the House of World Cultures .

From the 2013/14 season to 2019 he was co-director of the Maxim-Gorki-Theater and, together with Shermin Langhoff, was the artistic director of the theater. The German-speaking critics in Theater heute's survey voted Maxim-Gorki-Theater “Theater of the Year” in 2014 and 2016. The Prussian Sea Action Foundation jointly awarded Shermin Langhoff and Jens Hillje the “Theater Prize Berlin 2016”.

Jens Hillje received the Golden Lion of the Venice Biennale in summer 2019 for his life's work.
