Jens Sigfred Hopstock (born May 7, 1853 in Bergen ; † 1924 ), was a Norwegian engineer and telephone pioneer .

Life

Hopstock was trained as an engineer in Gothenburg . In Bergen he was involved in the introduction of electric light and the telephone. He was also active in road construction , tourism and steamship transport .

After meeting Graham Bell in 1877, Hopstock was commissioned to introduce the telephone throughout Scandinavia. He founded the "Vestlandske Telefonkompani" and built the private telephone line Voss - Gudvangen in 1889 and the line over the Vikafjell in 1892 , with which he connected the districts of Sogn , Voss and Hardanger with Bergen. The company went bankrupt in 1898 and was taken over by Telegrafvesenet .

In 1885 Hopstock applied for a concession for a private railway Voss – Gudvangen and in 1895 designed the Voss – Stalheim Electric Railway . An invitation to subscribe for shares for Aktieskelskabet Voss- Stalheim , Elektriske Jernbane , followed on June 5, 1895 . On September 12, 1895, the license application for the construction and operation of the railway line from Vossevangen to Stalheim was made. The project was never realized.

Jens Hopstock founded “Sogns Turistforening” in Vik in 1892 . This was the first tourist association in Nordre Bergenhus Amt , which later became Sogn og Fjordane .
