Beyond - Are you gay or are you Turkish?

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Beyond - Are you gay or are you Turkish? is a play by Nurkan Erpulat and Tunçay Kulaoğlu from 2008, which deals in a semi-documentary manner with homosexuality among young Turkish migrants in Germany .

Performance history

His first performance was Beyond - Are you gay or are you a Turk? in May 2008 at the Beyond Belonging Festival in Hebbel am Ufer under the direction of Erpulats. Further performances at HAU followed. In December 2008 the play was revived at Ballhaus Naunynstraße .

Emergence

Erpulat made the experience that two actually stigmatizing characteristics with the clichés attached to them (Turkish: macho, five children, violence against women, smelling of sweat and garlic & gay: peaceful, cultured) cancel each other out in Berlin and even to a small plus ("Minus times minus makes plus"), which helps to be more accepted by Germans. From this experience he developed the piece with Kulaoğlu. Erpulat interviewed 14 gay men of Turkish origin, most of whom, when asked in the subtitle, chose one of the two options. Five conversations were selected from the material and edited for the stage. Authentic experiences are staged and spun on by the director.

content

The piece about the identity difference between being gay and Turkish tries to shed new light on the discourse about belonging to the majority society and questions the self-image of those portrayed, whose spaces of self-assertion do not fit into conventional identity patterns. For the characters, the piece begins in front of a heavenly gate, where a kind of stewardess only wants to know one of them: gay or Turkish? Only one option is possible.

effect

The piece attracted attention. Radio stations reported on the project in cultural programs. Newspapers such as the daily newspaper or Bild used the piece as an opportunity to address homosexuality among migrants and related phenomena.
