Beyond the protocol is an autobiography by Bettina Wulff . The book, written with the help of Nicole Maibaum , was published by riva Verlag in Munich in September 2012 and was launched nationwide with a circulation of 100,000 copies.

In response to the violent criticism of the book, Bettina Wulff canceled all public appearances planned to promote the book in mid-September 2012.

Bettina Wulff looks back on her time as the wife of the Federal President. The publication of the autobiography , in which she also rejects the rumors about her private life prior to her marriage to Christian Wulff , which had become known immediately beforehand , was brought forward by the publisher from November 2012 to September 2012. The original planned title of the book was: My View of Things .

She describes how she grew up, the love affairs she had in her life and how she later met the then Prime Minister Wulff. At first she was rather amused by the much older man's advances, and the conservative image was also a problem for her. She experienced life at the side of the Prime Minister or Federal President as arduous and controlled by others. She also complains that the second Wulff family had little money left after deducting the maintenance for the first. In addition, as the wife of the Prime Minister or Federal President, she did not receive her own salary, despite the many obligations that came with it.

According to Cicero, Bettina Wulff is not only pulling the highest office of Germans into the banal with her book. It read like a teenager's diary. In the “Hardcover Non-Fiction Charts” of calendar week 37 (2012) by Media Control , the book was listed in first place. In calendar week 38, the book only reached number 4 and in week 39 it was no longer in the top 10 represented. In the Spiegel bestseller list hardcover, it took first and third place in calendar weeks 39 and 40, but fell to 8th and 10th place in weeks 41 and 42, respectively.

Copyright infringement via the Internet

In mid-September, an unauthorized copy was distributed on a website that was allegedly authorized by Bettina Wulff. Thereupon the Riva-Verlag took legal steps.

According to information from the publishing industry, Bettina Wulff is said to have received 60,000 euros for signing a contract with Riva Verlag. An additional success bonus is said to have been agreed for reaching the bestseller lists.

According to reports from September 2012, Nico Hofmann intended to make a television movie after the book . Hofmann denied in October that he wanted to make a film about the book or make a film about "the Wulffs". Rather, a period up to Christian Wulff's resignation from the office of Federal President, which Hofmann described as "something unique in the history of the Federal Republic", should be in a documentary feature film, for which beyond the protocol only forms part of the research basis.
