Jeremy Beecham Hugh, Baron Beecham , Kt , DL (* 17th November 1944 ) is a British politician of the Labor Party and a personality local politics. He was chairman ( leader ) of the Newcastle City Council and the first Chairman ( Chairman ) of the Local Government Association . From October 2005 to September 2006 he was chairman ( chairman ) of the National Executive Committee of the Labor Party.

life and career

Beecham attended the Royal Grammar School in Newcastle upon Tyne , and from 1962 to 1965, the University College of the University of Oxford , where he graduated with First Class Honors reached.

From 1968 to 2002 he was a partner at Beecham Peacock . Since 2002, he has been Consultant ( Consultant ). He was admitted as a solicitor in 1968 . In 1959 he joined the Labor Party and was elected Councilor for Benwell and Newcastle upon Tyne City in 1967. Beecham ran unsuccessfully in the Tynemouth constituency for the 1970 general election . From 1973 to 1977 he chaired the Social Services Committee of the Council and was Chairman ( Leader ) from 1977 to 1994, and Chairman ( Chair ) of the Finance Committee from 1979 to 1984. From 1977 to 1994 he was Chairman ( Chairman ) of Policy and Resources Committee . From 1985 to 1997 he was a member of the Development Committee .

Beecham was director of North Development Company Ltd from 1986 to 1991. Beecham was Commissioner of English Heritage from 1983 to 1987 . In 1985 he became a member of the Theater Royal Trust . From 1987 to 1989 he was a member of the Council of the Neighborhood Energy Association and since 1988 the President's Committee Business in the Community . 1991 Beecham Chairman (was chairman ) of the Association of Metropolitan Authorities (AMA). When the AMA 1 April 1997 with the Association of District Councils and the Association of County Councils for the Local Government Association (LGA) merged, he became the first chairman ( chairman ) of the LGA and remained so until 2004, then he became deputy Chairman ( Vice-Chairman ). He is also Chairman of the LGA Labor Group and President of the British Urban Regeneration Association . Beecham has served on numerous boards and committees in Newcastle and North East England and has advised the government.

From 1971 to 1983 he was a member of the NEC Local & Regional Government Sub-Committee . He has been a member of the Join Policy Committee since 1992 . From 1992 to 1998 he was a member of the Domestic and Intelligence Policy Committee . He was a member of the National Executive Committee of the Labor Party since 1998 and was its Chairman ( Chairman ) from 2005 to 2006, and Vice-Chairman ( Vice-Chairman ) from 2004 to 2005.

In 1994 he became Deputy Lieutenant of County Tyne and Wear and continues to represent Benwell and Scotswood on the City Council . Since 1989, Beecham has been a member of the council of the charity organization Common Purpose .

He became President of Age Concern Newcastle in 1995 and BURA in 1996 . Beecham has been President of the Newcastle Choral Society since 1997 . He has been a member of the Tyneside Cinema Trustee since 1999 . Since 2007 he has been a member of the supervisory board of the New Israel Fund and has been its vice-chairman since 2009 .

Beecham has been a member of the NHS Modernization Board since 2000 and the Intelligence Advisory Board of the Harold Hartog School of Government at Tel Aviv University since 2006 .

Membership in the House of Lords

Beecham was appointed Life Peer as Baron Beecham , of Benwell and Newcastle upon Tyne in the County of Tyne and Wear on July 20, 2010 . Its official introduction to the House of Lords took place on July 27, 2010 with the assistance of John Walton, Baron Walton of Detchant , and Jack Cunningham . He gave his inaugural address on October 5, 2010. Beecham is regularly present on meeting days.

Working in public

At a local conference in January 2011, he spoke out in favor of an increase in the expense allowance of a councilor. This has been questioned critically by the conservatives. In an article written for the Guardian , he took a critical look at the government-introduced Localism Bill . In January 2012 he advocated additions to the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Bill (LASPO). In view of discussed changes in the electoral law, he spoke out against the introduction of voluntary voter registration.

Honors

Beecham was in the 1994 Birthday Honors for Knight Bachelor beaten and in 1995 Freeman of the City of Newcastle. In 1989 he became an Honorary Fellow of the Newcastle-upon-Tyne Polytechnic . From the University of Newcastle upon Tyne he was awarded an honorary doctorate of Civil Law (Hon DCL) in 1992.
