John Walton, Baron Walton of Detchant

John Nicholas Walton, Walton Baron of Detchant (* 16th September 1922 ; † 21st April 2016 ) was a British physician for neurology and since 1989 a member of the House of Lords .

Life

Neurologist and medical and medical functionary

After attending school, Walton studied medicine at Newcastle Medical School , which at the time was still part of the University of Durham . After completing his studies, he worked as a doctor and specialized in neurology.

Since the mid-1970s, he increasingly took on functions in national medical and medical organizations and was, among other things, a member of the Medical Research Council between 1974 and 1978 and President of the British Medical Association (BMA) from 1980 to 1982 . He then took over the office of President of the General Medical Council (GMC) in 1982 and held this position until 1989. He was also in this period between 1984 and 1986 President of the Royal Society of Medicine UK and from 1987 to 1988, President of the Association neurologists (Association of British Neurologists) .

Most recently, Walton was also involved in international medical specialist associations and was first Vice President between 1987 and 1989 and then President of the World Federation of Neurology from 1989 to 1997 .

Because of his many years of service, he became a member of the Norwegian Academy of Sciences .

House of Lords

In 1989 Walton was raised to the nobility by a letters patent as a life peer entitled Baron Walton of Detchant, of Detchant in the County of Northumberland . On July 24, 1989 its introduction took place (Introduction) as a member of the House of Lords . In the House of Lords, Lord Walton was one of the non-party peers, the so-called Crossbencher .

During his longstanding membership in the House of Lords, he served on the House of Lords Science and Technology Committee from 1992 to 1996 and again from 1997 to 2001. During his first committee membership, he was also Chairman of the Committee on Ethics in Medicine from 1993 to 1994.

Even after his retirement as a doctor, Lord Walton continued to work in numerous medical organizations such as President of the College of Occupational Therapists , the Neuroscience Research Foundation and the Durham and Newcastle Medical Graduates Association . He was also Vice President of the Epilepsy Research Foundation and the Parkinson's Disease Society .

He has also worked for other institutions, including serving as a board member of Newcastle University and President of Bamburgh Castle Golf Club , the Belford Development Trust and the Belford Show . Lord Walton was also Vice President of the Guideposts Trust and the Research Defense Society .
