Jernej Zaplotnik

Jernej "Nejc" Zaplotnik (born April 16, 1952 in Kranj ; † April 24, 1983 at Manaslu ) was a Slovenian mountaineer.

Zaplotnik wrote mountaineering history when he and Andrej Štremfelj conquered the entire west ridge of Mount Everest for the first and only time : on May 13, 1979, both reached the summit and then descended via the Hornbein Couloir . Zaplotnik climbed about 350 peaks, including the Makalu (1975) and the Gasherbrum II (1977) two more eight-thousanders. Zaplotnik died at the age of 31 in an avalanche at around 4,500 meters above sea level on Manaslu .
