Jeronim Perović
Jeronim Perović (* 1971 ) is a Swiss historian and political scientist . He has been Professor of Eastern European History at the University of Zurich since 2011 and is Director of the Center for Eastern European Studies (CEES).
Live and act
Perović studied history, political science and Russian literature at the University of Zurich from 1991 to 1997 and received his doctorate in 2000 with a thesis on Russian regionalism. In 2013 he completed his habilitation at the institution of the same name on the subject of North Caucasian history under Russian rule.
Before taking up his position as professor at the University of Zurich, he was a research assistant at the History Department of the University of Basel (2008–2011) and prior to that, he was in charge of the program for the research area Russia / Eurasia at the Center for Security Studies at ETH Zurich (1997–2003, 2003–2005) . He has completed numerous stays at foreign universities and research institutions. He was a student at the Russian State Humanities University in Moscow (1995–1996), a short-term scholar at the Kennan Institute of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington DC (2002), and a visiting scholar at the Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies Harvard University (2003–2005) and Guest Scholar at the Center for Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies at Stanford University (2014).
In his work, Perović deals with both historical and current issues of Eastern Europe. At the University of Zurich, he researches and teaches Russian and Soviet history and the history of the Balkans from the 19th century to the present day. He headed two research projects funded by the SNSF: “Energy and Power: A Cultural and Historical Contemplation from the Early Soviet Era to Contemporary Russia” and “Security, War and Peace in the Soviet Union and Russia”. The results of his research are u. a. published in the journals Europe-Asia Studies, Kritika: Explorations in Russian and Eurasian History , Journal of Contemporary History , Jahrbücher für Geschichte Osteuropas , Journal of Cold War Studies , Geopolitics , Demokratizatsiya: The Journal of Post-Soviet Democratization , Eastern Europe: Zeitschrift für Current issues of the East and Europe Regional . In addition, he has written a number of book contributions and has contributed to the editing of several anthologies (published by Routledge , Oxford University Press , Palgrave Macmillan and Peter Lang , among others ).
Perović is co-editor of the online journals Russian Analytical Digest and Caucasus Analytical Digest . He has repeatedly commented on current events in Eastern Europe and taken a position in the media. He is co-founder and head of the Center for Eastern European Studies (CEES) at the University of Zurich, which was founded in 2017.
