Jerzy Godziszewski

Jerzy Godziszewski (born April 24, 1935 in Vilnius , † March 4, 2016 in Bydgoszcz ) was a Polish pianist and music teacher.

The son of a sculptor and a pianist had piano lessons from the age of six with Aleksandra Dirvianskajte , later with Emmy Altberg . In 1946 he continued his training with Irena Kurpisz-Stefanowa at the State Music Academy in Toruń. After graduation, he went to the Poznan Music Academy in 1952 and completed his training at the Warsaw Music Academy with Stanisław Szpinalski and, after his death, with Maria Wiłkomirska . In 1960 he received his diploma with distinction.

In the same year he won second prize at the International Chopin Competition and a special prize donated by Witold Małcużyński . In 1960 and 1961 he took part in Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli's summer courses in Arezzo. In addition to Poland, he has performed as a concert pianist in Czechoslovakia, Romania, Bulgaria, Germany, Austria, Italy, France, Sweden and Norway. His repertoire included works by composers such as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart , Ludwig van Beethoven , Fryderyk Chopin , Franz Liszt , Johannes Brahms , Claude Debussy , Sergei Prokofjew , Béla Bartók , Olivier Messiaen , Maurice Ravel and Karol Szymanowski . He recorded all of Szymanowski's piano works for Polish radio.

From 1967 Godziszewski led a piano class at the Music Academy in Breslau . In 1978 he moved to Bydgoszcz and taught at the local music academy until his death. In 1998 he received the Karol Szymanowski Foundation Prize. The Polish Musicians' Association honored him with a gold medal for his life's work. The Bygoszcz Music Academy awarded him an honorary doctorate in 2007.
