Jerzy Jarniewicz (born May 4, 1958 in Łowicz , People's Republic of Poland ) is a Polish poet , literary critic and translator .

Life

Jarniewicz attended high school in Łódź from 1974 to 1977 and made his debut as a high school student with the poem dano nam rozum, abyśmy błądzili , which was published in 1977 in the journal Do Rzeczy . After graduating from high school, he studied English from 1977 to 1982 and philosophy from 1980 to 1984 at the University of Łódź . After completing his studies, he spent the 1984/84 lecture year as a research fellow at the University of Oxford . He began to publish articles, reviews and translations in 1987 in the monthly Literatura na Świecie and became editor there in 1996. With his work The Uses of the Commonplace in Contemporary British Poetry: Philip Larkin, Douglas Dunn, Craig Raine , he received his doctorate from the University of Łódź in 1990. In the following years he published various newspapers and magazines and in 1994 received another scholarship from the University of Oxford. Back in Poland he became a member of the editorial board of Tygiel Kultury in 1995 and a reviewer of Tygodnik Powszechny in 1996 . Thanks to the International Writing Program at the University of Iowa , he was able to spend 1999 on a scholarship in the USA . He obtained his habilitation in 2003 at the University of Łódź with the thesis The Bottomless Center. The Uses of History in the Poetry of Seamus Heaney . In 2006 he spent three months in Farmleigh , Dublin, as Writer in Residence . After that he was Associate Professor at the University of Łódź and the University of Warsaw until 2015 . In addition, he became a member of the jury for the Gydnia Literature Prize in 2006 . Since 2015 he has been the director of the Institute for British Literature and Culture at the University of Łódź.

He lives in Łódź.
