Jerzy Majewski
Jerzy Majewski , also Georg Majewski (born August 27, 1904 , † August 22, 1942 in the Dachau concentration camp ) was a Polish clergyman and martyr of the Catholic Church .
Life
Majewski was one of the first to graduate from the Polish school in Gdansk . He was ordained a priest on December 19, 1931 and came as a chaplain to the Maria Meeresstern Church in Sopot . In 1937 he was vicar at the Sacred Heart Church in Langfuhr (today: Gdańsk-Wrzeszcz ). He was a member of various Polish organizations.
At the beginning of the Second World War , the vicar was arrested. Presumably shortly afterwards, like Marian Górecki , he was transferred to the Stutthof concentration camp , where they worked in a group of 40 priests and teachers to set up the camp. Majewski continued his ordeal through the Sachsenhausen concentration camp to the Dachau concentration camp , where he perished on August 22, 1942, a few days before his 38th birthday.
Commemoration
In Sopot since 1985 a memorial to him, four Catholic chaplains who died in a similar way and 69 other citizens. A plaque on the Marienkapelle in Söder near Hildesheim also mentions Georg Majewski . Nothing is known about a process of beatification as a martyr.
The Catholic Church accepted Georg Majewski as a witness of faith in the German martyrology of the 20th century .
