Jesús Abad Colorado López (born June 22, 1967 in Medellín , Colombia ) is a Colombian photojournalist . His work includes human rights and the armed conflict in Colombia .

Life

Even the child of a family displaced from the country, Jesús Colorado has put his eyes, ears and camera entirely at the service of the victims of the decades-long conflict in Colombia. Over the past 25 years he has shot thousands of photos, documented massacres, escape and atrocities, and portrayed mainly women, children and the elderly.

He received a BA in Communication from the Universidad de Antioquia . From 1992 to 2001 he worked as a photographer for the daily newspaper El Colombiano in Medellín. His work has been shown in countless exhibitions, both nationally and internationally. He is the co-author of two books, Relatos e Imágenes: El Desplazamiento Forzado en Colombia (“Stories and illustrations: Forced resettlements in Colombia”) and Desde la Prisión, Realidades de las Cárceles en Colombia (“From prison, realities of the prisons in Colombia ”) and has worked on many other books on human rights.

His photographic archive deals with forced internal displacement in Colombia, the suffering of those affected and their acts of resistance, as well as the scars that the conflict has left in the country. He has also documented the atrocities committed by armed actors, including crimes against humanity, genocide and environmental disasters.

In 2000 he was kidnapped at a road block by the ELN guerrillas and held for two days.

His work has been awarded numerous prizes. He has won the Simón Bolívar Prize for Journalism three times . In 2006 he received the Caritas Switzerland Prize and the CPJ International Press Freedom Awards from the Committee for the Protection of Journalists . The CPJ's committee had never given this award to a photojournalist before. In 2008 he was on the shortlist for the Pix Pictet .

Almost 600 pictures from his 25-year career can be seen in the spring of 2019 in an exhibition with the significant name Testigo , "Witness" in Claustro de San Agustín in Bogotá .
