Club career
In his youth, Garay, who was born in Bilbao, northern Spain, played first with a club in Santutxu (1945-1946), then with a club from Begoña (1946-1949). In 1949, the year before the first World Cup after World War II , Garay was signed by the northern Spanish club SD Erandio Club . After this one year in the Basque Country , he went on to Athletic Bilbao , at that time one of the most prestigious clubs in Spain . Garay stayed there for ten years until 1960. In a team around Zarra , called Zarra, Agustín Gaínza , José Luis Panizo and Rafael Iriondo , Garay came to 236 games (7 goals) in the Primera División .
Then he was signed for a transfer fee of 5.5 million pesetas from FC Barcelona . Athletic used the transfer proceeds to finance the construction of the north stand of the San Mamés , which has since been popularly known as the "Tribuna Garay". He stayed with the star team from Catalonia until 1965, when he moved to FC Málaga . Garay ended his career there in 1966.
National team career
Jesús Garay appeared for Spain 29 times in his career. In his international season between 1953 and 1962 he scored his only goal in a 5-1 win against the Netherlands at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid in 1957. With the Spanish national soccer team Garay took part in the 1962 World Cup in Chile . There, however, the Spanish team was eliminated in the preliminary round.
