Jessie's Girl is a 1981 song by Rick Springfield , written by him and produced by Keith Olsen. It appeared on the Working Class Dog album .

history

Jessie's Girl is about a man who is in love with his best friend's girlfriend. Springfield had taken a class on stained glass . Also from his class were his friend Gary and his girlfriend. Originally, Springfield wanted to use his friend's real name for his song, but decided to use a different name instead. He chose Jessie as he was wearing a t-shirt with Ron Jessie's name on at the time .

Springfield said that he couldn't remember the friend's name and believed he was inspired by the friend too. He said in an interview with Oprah Winfrey : “I was never really introduced to her. It was always just, like, panting from afar. "(German:" I was never really introduced to her. It was always as if I was panting from afar. ") Springfield reported that Winfrey's people had tried after the interview to track down the real girlfriend and found that Springfield's class teacher had passed away two years earlier and the class papers had been posthumously discarded. In 2006, Jessie's Girl in the VH1 list 100 Greatest Songs of the 80s listed at No. 20th

The rock song was released on February 1, 1981, and it became a number one hit in the United States and Australia. At the Grammy Awards in 1982 , the song won in the category Best Male Pop Vocal Performance - Rock (Best Rock Vocal Performance, Male).

The song could be heard in the series Glee as well as in the films Boogie Nights , 30 über Nacht and Suicide Squad . Twenty years after its publication, Springfield said, “I'm thrilled by it! As a writer, all you can ask is that a song has legs. It has an appeal that keeps coming back. "(German:" I am thrilled! As a songwriter you can only ask yourself whether a song has legs. It has a charm that keeps coming back. ").

Music video

In the music video, Springfield watches a young couple with envy and wishes for the girl's love. It starts with Jessie (played by Steven Antin ) spraying "Jessie's Girl" on the wall and then walking away with his girlfriend while Springfield watches and gives his monologue in the form of the verses of the song. Springfield meets the couple again on the sidewalk and stares at them as they walk past. He later goes home, looks in the mirror and mourns why Jessie's girlfriend doesn't like him. Then he destroys the mirror when he sees an illusion of his girlfriend in it.
