The Jesuit college in Brno was the third oldest Czech College of the Jesuits , which existed from 1582 to 1773. The building complex was demolished in 1904, only the former church and the baroque portal were spared from demolition. Both objects have been listed as Czech cultural monuments with a common monument protection number since May 3, 1958.

history

In 1578 the Jesuits came to Brno, where they began building their college in 1582. It took more than fifty years to complete. The new construction of the Church of the Assumption itself only took four years. It was inaugurated on September 22nd, 1602.

In 1773, Emperor Joseph II dissolved the Jesuit order in the Habsburg monarchy . After the Jesuits left Brno in 1773, the Olomouc Academy was briefly active in the building complex , after which it served as a barracks for the military administration . In the so-called "Jesuit barracks" Robert Musil went regularly to fencing in 1901/02.

Of the college building that was demolished in 1904, only the baroque portal in Mozartova Street, created by Jan Křtitel Erna and Jan Kašpar Pröbstl, remains.

Personalities

  • Martin Stredonius (1587–1649) was rector of the college and in 1645 made great contributions to the defense of the city of Brno against the Swedes.
  • Bohuslav Balbín (1621–1688) was the most famous professor at the college.
  • Josef Dobrovský (1753–1829), historian and founder of Slavic studies , joined the Jesuits in Brno in 1772.
