The Jesuit college in Jindřichův Hradec (German Neuhaus ) in the Jihočeský kraj region (South Bohemia) in the Czech Republic was a college of the Jesuits that existed from 1594 to 1773. The college building and the associated Maria Magdalena church have been a listed building since May 3, 1958. The Muzeum Jindřichohradecka ( Museum Neuhaus ) is housed in the former Jesuit seminary across the street .

history

According to the Jesuit chronicle, Adam II von Neuhaus and the Prague Jesuit economist Jan Vivari decided to found the college in September 1592 at the funeral of Wilhelm von Rosenberg in Vyšší Brod . Adam II von Neuhaus and his strictly Catholic wife Katharina von Montfort finally founded the college in January 1594, which soon led to violent conflicts with the majority of the Utraquist citizens.

The church of Maria Magdalena was probably the oldest church in the city in the 13th century. Its current shape dates from the 17th century.

With the abolition of the Jesuit order in 1773, the college and high school in Jindřichův Hradec were also closed.
