The Jesuit College Mindelheim was a college of the Jesuits in Mindelheim , Upper Swabia , which existed from 1622 to 1774. Today various museums are housed here.

history

The Swabian allodial rule of Mindelheim was acquired on September 21, 1616 by Maximilian I of Bavaria. In 1618 a Jesuit branch was founded in the former Augustinian monastery, which was elevated to a college in 1622. From the mid-1620s, the new building of the college was initiated. The Jesuits supervised the college until the abolition of the Jesuit order in 1773.

From 1777 to 1781 the building complex served as an electoral hunting lodge, from 1781 to 1808 it was the seat of a commander of the Order of Malta . In 1820 the college, which had existed until then, was dissolved and sold to private owners. It has been owned by the Unterallgäu district since 1980 .

In 1986 the Mindelheim Textile Museum was opened on the second floor of the former Jesuit college. It goes back to a foundation in 1984 by Hilda Sandtner , a professor at Augsburg University , who donated her considerable private collection of textiles and art objects of all kinds to the city of Mindelheim. In 1989 the Swabian Nativity Museum was set up on the first floor . In 1994, the new branch of the State Archaeological Collection was established on the second floor of the east wing .

Building description

The listed building complex is an irregular three-wing complex with two or three-story gable roof buildings. The southern part of the east wing with the sacristy, Ignatius chapel and the former oratory was made by Johannes Holl 1627–1629. The west wing according to plans by Johannes Holl was built by Albert Vaironi 1630/1631, the east wing with transverse tract by Michael Thumb 1668–1671. Changes took place in the 18th century.

The former Jesuit Church of the Annunciation

Today's Catholic branch church of the Annunciation is the former Augustinian or Jesuit church. It is a pilaster-structured wall pillar system with a retracted choir and western stair towers. The choir dates from the middle of the 15th century, the nave by Johannes Holl from 1625/1626. A renovation took place in 1721/1722.
