Joachim Marcinek

Joachim Marcinek (born October 1, 1931 in Schwirz , Lower Silesia Province ; † January 22, 2019 ) was a German geographer and professor of regional studies in Germany.

Joachim Marcinek gained international fame through his outstanding role in the field of Ice Age research and as the author of textbooks and popular scientific literature on geomorphology , hydrology , spatial planning , regional studies and the history of science .

Joachim Marcinek worked uninterruptedly at the Geographical Institute (formerly Geography Section) of the Humboldt University in Berlin since 1956 . As a student of Fritz Haefke, he received his doctorate in 1960 and qualified as a professor in 1964. At the same time, he taught as an assistant, senior assistant and lecturer in the physical geography department. At the same time, as Urania consultant, he ensured the popular science dissemination of geographical expertise.

After the reunification of Germany , Berlin Geography elected him in 1990 to be the founding dean of the reopened traditional institute of Albrecht Penck and Ferdinand von Richthofen . In this function Joachim Marcinek had a decisive influence on the realignment of Berlin's geography until 1995. After his retirement in 1996, he mainly devoted himself to the publication of regional geographic and cultural literature as well as the transfer of knowledge into water ecological practice. Here he accompanied the Institute for Applied Aquatic Ecology GmbH in Seddin (near Potsdam) founded by his student Olaf Mietz as a board member in numerous scientific projects. Its corporate divisions “Applied Research” and “Aquatic Ecological Services” deal mainly with problems of the ecology of lakes and rivers, as well as related fields.
