Otfried Baume

Otfried Baume (born August 20, 1951 in Magdeburg ) is a German geographer and landscape ecologist .

After graduating from 1972 to 1976 for graduate teacher of geography and biology at the University of Greifswald he was until 1979 a teacher at the Polytechnic High School in Lüttgenrode ( county Halberstadt ). After an apprenticeship in physical geography , he received his doctorate in 1982 at the "Karl Liebknecht" University of Education in Potsdam on the subject of "Site-specific and weather-related differences in yield of winter rye and apple crops in the Havel area near Potsdam".

After a short time as a research assistant at the Institute for Fruit Research of the Academy of Agricultural Sciences of the GDR in Marquardt near Potsdam, he worked as a permanent research assistant in the Geography section (from 1990 Geographical Institute) at the Humboldt University in Berlin . In this position, graduated Baume 1985/1986 an additional study at the Geography Faculty at the Lomonosov Moscow State University for Landscape Ecology , is included stays at other Soviet universities. In 1989 he completed his habilitation with the topic “To record and characterize landscape dynamics through analysis, evaluation and prognosis of processes and effects in the landscape” and in 1990 acquired the facultas docendi . In 1993 he received the title of Privatdozent .

In October 1995, Baume accepted a professorship for geography and landscape ecology at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich (LMU). In the Munich geosciences he took on functions as head of the institute, director of the department and vice dean. Otfried Baume is honorary chairman of the Geographical Society Munich for many years .

The focus of his scientific work is landscape ecology as well as high mountain and Quaternary research with regional emphasis on the Caucasus , northern Tian Shan , the Altai and the Alps . In addition, he promoted the scientific exchange between the LMU and the Universidad de La Habana (Facultad de Geografía) as well as the CITMA (Ministerio de Ciencia, Tecnología y Medio Ambiente) on environmental research in Cuba. On March 31, 2017, Otfried Baume retired .
