In 1571 Jesuits came to Poznan, where they were given the St. Stanisław Church, two hospitals, the city school "ad Sanctam Mariam Magdalenam" and numerous properties. In 1611 the college led by them received from the Polish King Sigismund III. Wasa the right to award academic degrees, which was granted in 1650 by Johann II Casimir and in 1678 by Johann III. Sobieski was re-confirmed.

The building, known as the Poznan Jesuit College, was built between 1701 and 1733 under the direction of the architect Giovanni Catenazzi . Jakub Wujek became the first principal of the school . Subjects at the college were mathematics , geometry , physics , philosophy , law , zoology and languages. The school had well-equipped biological and physical laboratories, its own observatory and a theater . The final upgrade to a university failed despite the initial papal approval due to the resistance of the Jagiellonian University , which did not want any competition from Poznan.

Until the abolition of the Jesuit order in 1773, the school existed as a Jesuit college, after which it was merged with the Lubrański Academy to form the Voivodeship School ( Wojewódzka Szkoła Wydziałowa ). This was converted into a grammar school in 1793 after the Second Partition of Poland and, after several further reorganizations and name changes, still exists today as the Liceum św. Marii Magdaleny (St. Mary Magdalene Lyceum). This is based on the tradition of the Jesuit college just like the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan, founded in 1919 .
