The church

The Jesus Church in Kirschkau is the Protestant church in Kirschkau in the Saale-Orla district in Thuringia .

location

The federal road 94 leads through the village of Kirschkau past the Kirschkau church and connects the village with Schleiz and Zeulenroda-Triebes . The district belongs to the Schleizer Oberland and is located in the southeast Thuringian slate mountains .

history

1407 a church Petrus und Paul was mentioned in Kirschkau, which was extended in 1503. It was demolished in 1751 to make way for a new church to be built, called the Jesus Church . It is one of the most important examples of Protestant church building in Thuringia in the 18th century. Count Heinrich XII. Reuss zu Lobenstein commissioned the building inspector Johann Gottlieb Riedel with the construction, which was realized between 1751 and 1753.

architecture

The church building attracted attention with its idiosyncratic design.

  • The oval space is extended by four rectangular cross arms. These are separated in the church by galleries and the pulpit altar. The church tower with a hood and high double lantern rises above the northern arm of the cross . The southern arm of the cross is the vestibule with organ and altar.
  • Rococo decorations , sculptures and solid furnishings create the solemn impression.
  • The physically deeply staggered pulpit altar is the work of Philipp Konrad Ehrhardt. Two curved flights of stairs lead to the protruding pulpit. The altarpiece is adorned with columns and vases and has a cloud halo at the end. The altarpiece with the crucifixion of Christ and apostles Peter and Paul on the sides are reminiscent of the consecrated previous building. The baptismal font stands in front of the pulpit altar. The changing table for the person to be baptized is under the organ gallery .
