Jewett is a city in Leon County in the US state of Texas in the United States .
geography
The city is located on Highway 79 and Farm Road 39 in the northwest corner of the county, in East Texas, and has a total area of 5.4 km², of which 0.1 km² is water.
history
The place was founded in 1871 by the International Railroad Company and named after Henry J. Jewett , a prominent judge and politician at the time.
Demographic data
According to the 2000 census, 861 people lived here in 333 households and 223 families. The population density was 161.4 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 75.15% White, 7.67% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, and 14.87% other ethnic groups. About 2.32% were mixed race and 23.58% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 333 households, 38.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 47.1% of these were married couples living together. 14.4% were single mothers and 33.0% were non-families. 30.0% of all households were single households and there were people living in 14.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.22.
