Yevgeny Ivanovich Lopatin
Yevgeny Ivanovich Lopatin ( Russian Евгений Иванович Лопатин ; born December 26, 1917 in Balashov ; † July 21, 2011 ) was a Soviet weightlifter .
Lopatin came from Saratov and was a member of the Soviet Army. He started lifting weights before the Second World War , but only became Soviet champion several times after that war. His greatest achievement was winning the silver medal at the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki . The starting opportunities for Soviet weightlifters were limited at the time, because the Soviet Union did not take part in the 1948 Olympic Games, nor in the 1947, 1949 and 1951 World Championships. It was precisely in those years that Yevgeny Lopatin was at the peak of his productivity. In 1954 he ended his sporting career. His son Sergei Lopatin followed in his footsteps and became a successful weightlifter as well.
