Georgi Wladimirowitsch Popow ( Russian Георгий Владимирович Попов , scientific transliteration Georgij Popov ; born December 12, 1912 in Baku , † 1974 ) was a Soviet weightlifter .

Career

After Grigory Nowak , Georgi Popov was the most famous and probably also the best Soviet weightlifter in the 1930s. At that time he was already known in the West. Grigori had started weightlifting in 1930 and won his first Soviet bantamweight championship in 1933, which was to be followed by ten more in featherweight and lightweight. At the international championships, in which he was only able to take part after the Second World War due to the separation of the sport at that time into a civil sport and workers' sport, he won two medals at the age of 34 and 35 respectively. In 1937 and 1938 he would undoubtedly have become world champion after the achievements he had shown in those years at the Soviet championships. In order to be able to compare how strong the performances of Popov, which can be seen from the results at the Soviet championships, were at that time, let us consider the performances of the winners at the German championships in 1934 (the European championship was held in the OD) and the world champions in 1937 and Listed in 1938.
