Sergei Evgenjewitsch Lopatin ( Russian Сергей Евгеньевич Лопатин , scientific transliteration Sergej Evgen'evič Lopatin ; born March 19, 1939 in Saratov ; † January 17, 2004 ) was a Soviet weightlifter .

Career

Sergei Lopatin grew up in a sporty family. His father was Yevgeny Lopatin , who won the silver medal behind Thomas Kono in the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki . It is therefore not surprising that he also turned to weightlifting as a teenager, after swimming, doing gymnastics and cycling like most boys. In 1955 he played his first competition with a body weight of 52 kg, in which he achieved 200 kg in the Olympic three-way fight.

In 1958 he was drafted into the Soviet Army and won the army championship in the lightweight 350 kg in the same year. In order to get to international assignments, Sergei first had to assert himself in the national competitions. That was very difficult in the former Soviet Union, because in these fights better performances were often achieved both in the top and in the breadth than in the Olympic Games and World Championships. Sergei only came to a world championship. The reason for this may have been that his open, carefree manner often offended the Soviet functionaries , who preferred him to Viktor Buschuyev and Vladimir Kaplunov , whom he had often defeated in national competitions.
