Yevgeny Sergeyevich Popov

Evgeni Sergejewitsch Popow ( Russian Евгений Сергеевич Попов , English transcription Yevgeniy Popov ; born April 25, 1976 in Krasnoyarsk ) is a Russian bobsleigh pilot .

Yevgeny Popov began taking part in bobsleigh competitions in 1996. He was promoted to the national bobsleigh team just a year later. Popow takes part in both the two-man and the four-man bobsleigh competition. Among his most important pushers are or were Dmitri Stjopuschkin , Dmitri Trunenkow , Alexei Andryunin , Roman Oreschnikow and Pyotr Makarchuk . Since 2004 he has been one of the world's top bobsleighers in both bobsleigh classes.

In his first World Cup season in 2004/2005, he did not get beyond sixth place in the Altenberg 2-man bobsleigh race . In the following season he celebrated the first podium of his career in the four-man bobsleigh with third place in Cesana Pariol . With three World Cup victories and two second places, the 2006/2007 season was his most successful to date. In the four-man competition, he won the overall World Cup this season. At the Olympic Winter Games of Turin in 2006, he finished ninth among the four- and the 18th place in the two-.

Since the 2007/08 season, Popow stagnated in his performances. By the 2008/09 season they began to deteriorate noticeably. After Popow refused to work with the association to improve materials, he had to leave the World Cup team at the end of 2008.
