Evgenija Leonidowna Ruskol , born Evgenija Leonidowna Sidorowa , ( Russian Евгения Леонидовна Рускол , birth name Russian Сидорова ; born February 13, 1927 in Lugansk ; † August 29, 2017 ) was a Russian physicist and astronomer .

Life

Yevgenia Leonidovna graduated from Moscow University in 1949. She then worked at the Institute for Geophysics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (AN-SSSR), initially as an aspirant with Otto Juljewitsch Schmidt . During this time she was married to the engineer of the same age of Jewish origin Viktor Issaakowitsch Ruskol, with whom she had their son Alexei in 1950.

In 1957, Yevgenia Ruskol moved to the Institute for Earth Physics of the AN-SSSR, which was created in 1955 from the Institute for Geophysics , in which she became the main scientific collaborator. She became known for her dissertation on the origin of the moon in connection with the accretion theory , with which she received her doctorate in physical-mathematical sciences in 1976 . She worked in the Schmidt- Safronow group. In continuation of Schmidt's ideas, she developed the theory of the common formation of the earth and moon as a double planet from a cloud of pre-planetary matter in the vicinity of the sun . She studied the changes in the distance between the earth and the moon and other parameters of the moon's orbit that resulted from the friction in the tidal movements , as well as the influence of this friction on the thermal history of the earth and moon. It made important contributions to research into the formation of giant planets and their satellite systems . Her work has appeared in leading Russian and foreign magazines. The English translation of their 1975 monograph on the formation of the moon has been published by NASA .

Ruskol was married to Safronov for the second time.
