Viktor Sergeevich Safronov

Viktor Sergeyevich Safronov ( Russian Виктор Сергеевич Сафронов ; born October 11 . Jul / 24. October  1917 greg. In Velikiye Luki , † 18th September 1999 in Moscow ) was a Russian physicist and astronomer .

Life

Safronov graduated from the mechanical - mathematical faculty of Moscow University with degree in 1941. Then he was the soldier Red Army in the German-Soviet war was until 1944. In 1945, he aspirant in the Institute of Physics of the Earth and 1949 research assistant. 1951–1957 he was scientific secretary of the Astronomy Council of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (AN-SSSR). In 1967 he received his doctorate in physical-mathematical sciences . From 1974 he headed the group for the origin and evolution of the earth and planets .

Safronov carried out fundamental work on the cosmogony of planets. He developed a model for planet formation from a gas cloud with accretion and formation of a planetesimal . He formulated and solved the equations for the coagulation of particles in pre-planetary structures, taking into account their possible decay. According to his model, the earth formed over a period of 10 8 years. The inner layers were formed at relatively low temperatures of up to 1000 K , while the outer layers reached melting temperatures .

Safronow was married to the physicist Yevgenia Leonidovna Ruskol .

A crater on Pluto and the minor planet or asteroid (3615) discovered by Edward LG Bowell in 1983 were named Safronov after Safronow . Safronov's work was the basis of the BBC film The Planets (1999).
