Jiří Otter

Jiří Otter (born July 31, 1919 in Pilsen ; † February 2, 2018 in Prague ) was a Czech Protestant theologian , pastor and church councilor of the Church of the Bohemian Brethren .

Live and act

Otter studied Protestant theology and was ordained pastor of the Church of the Bohemian Brethren. During the time of the occupation of Czechoslovakia , as a Bohemian patriot , he had to reckon with observation and persecution. In 1944 and 1945 he was interned in camps of the German occupiers , about which he published an experience report in 2009.

After the liberation of the Nazi tyranny he put a church historical dissertation on the history of Hussite ago and became a doctor of theology doctorate . After a time as a parish priest and senior , he was appointed church council in 1972 and coordinated the relations of his church with its partners in the ecumenical movement . This included contacts with the Gustav-Adolf-Werk of the EKD , with which a continuous exchange and mutual visits were organized. Otter received numerous tour groups in Prague , to whom he introduced the history of the Hussites and parish life in the Brethren Church.

Jiří Otter was a member of the Christian Peace Conference , at whose 1st All-Christian Peace Assembly he was involved in 1961 in Prague.

On his 90th birthday, Otter was awarded the “Golden Heart for Europe” by the Friends of the German-Czech Understanding.
