Jiaozhou ( Chinese  膠 州市  /  胶 州市 , Pinyin Jiāozhōu Shì , obsolete after Stange Kiautschou-Schi ) is an independent city in the province of Shandong in the east of the People's Republic of China . It is located east of Jiaozhou Bay ( 膠州湾  /  胶州湾 , Jiāozhōu Wān , obsolete after Stange Kiautschou-Wan ), also called "Kiautschou Bay" obsolete.

Jiaozhou part of the administrative area of the prefecture-level city of Qingdao . Jiaozhou has an area of ​​1,210 km² and a population of 843,100 (as of the end of 2010) .

The county-level city was formerly administratively called Jiao County ( 膠 縣  /  胶 县 , Jiāo Xiàn ).

history

Early settlement of the place is documented by Neolithic finds. The Neolithic Sanlihe site ( 三里河 遺址  /  三里河 遗址 , Sānlǐhé Yízhǐ ) has been on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China (6-115) since 2006 .

The first mention of the place Kiautschou in the year 880 is known from Ibn Chordadhbeh . At that time, the place was a "flourishing port city", which was important for the Arab shipping and trade between Shantung and Korea. When the old port silted up, the place lost its importance. A new port was built near Tsingtau .

From 1898 to 1905 a German company of the garrison of the German colony Kiautschou was in the city of Kiautschou.

At the community level, the independent city is made up of five street districts and thirteen large communities. These are:
