Jim Brewer (musician)
James Brewer , better known as Jim Brewer (born October 3, 1920 in Brookhaven , Mississippi , † June 3, 1988 in Chicago , Illinois ) was an influential African-American blues singer and guitarist . He was often called " Blind Jim Brewer " - an addition that is not uncommon for blues musicians, but which he never accepted for himself (" My mother didn't name me 'Blind', she named me 'Jim' ".)
Born in Brookhaven , Mississippi , he moved to Chicago like many of his compatriots in the 1940s and spent the rest of his life here (mostly on Maxwell Street ) making his living as a roving street musician playing blues and gospel music. Since the folk and blues revival of the 1960s, he often played next on blues and folk - festivals .
His music has been handed down to posterity on various record samplers and on two of his own albums . He appeared in a total of four documentaries :
- Mike Shea's "And This Is Free" (1964)
- "Blues Like Showers Of Rain" (1970)
- "Big City Blues" (1980)
- "Maxwell Street Alive (1981)
Jim Brewer died in Chicago , Illinois at the age of 68 .
