life and career
Growing up in Colts Neck ( New Jersey ), he left his family after elementary school and got by - at times homeless - with various jobs. After serving in the United States Navy , he began to build his first sculptures with architectural elements, which he exhibited in New York.
The sculptor Jacques Lipchitz showed him a method for producing a sculpture of a woman. The sculpture was exhibited and sold through his own gallery “Iron Butterfly”. He taught students in his gallery and sold works of art there at the same time. Other artists such as Gerald Lübeck , Jonathan Talbot and Virginia Laudano also taught students at Jim Gary's gallery. Eventually he closed the gallery and only worked from his studio. He developed a traveling exhibition consisting of many of his large sculptures, Jim Gary's Twentieth Century Dinosaurs .
