Jim Guthrie (musician)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jim Guthrie (born July 1973 ) is a Canadian musician. In 1999 he co-founded the internationally known band Royal City . After the end of 2004 he has been working almost exclusively as a soloist since the mid-2000s, he has released several albums that are heavily influenced by folk, pop and indie. From the second half of the 2000s Guthrie made a name for himself as a composer of soundtracks for films and especially games, especially his work for Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP and the film Indie Game: The Movie are noteworthy .

Life

Guthrie grew up in Guelph . In 1992 he began to make his first recordings with his own four-track device and to play his first concerts. In the following years he gained local fame, and he regularly documented Guelph's underground music scene, which was very lively in the mid-1990s, in a radio program called “The Royal City Homerock Eruption”.

In 1999 Guthrie released his solo debut A Thousand Songs, almost entirely produced on a Playstation , despite the folky sound . With this record he was able to gain the first major critical acclaim in Canada.

Aaron Riches , who also comes from Guelph but lives in Toronto, intended to record a record in Guelph in 1999 in Guthrie's recording studio, the Roc Sak . As a studio musician, Riches asked the members of Guthrie's band The Jim Guthrie Quintet to join. During the recording process around Guthrie, Riches, Nathan Lawr and Simon Osborne, the group formed a new folk rock band called Royal City , which soon moved to Toronto. Royal City made their debut in 2000 with the album At Rush Hour The Cars on Three Guts Records , the other albums were released on Rough Trade Records . Guthrie was a member of the band until the end of 2004, and they gained some attention, particularly in Canada and the USA.

During his time at Royal City Guthrie remained active as a solo artist, the album Morning Noon Night was released in 2002 , again largely recorded on a Playstation, albeit supplemented by musicians. In 2003 he released the album Now, More Than Ever . Recorded by an ensemble of members of renowned Canadian bands such as the Hidden Cameras or the Constantines and influenced by the string arrangements by Owen Pallett , the album received strong critical acclaim and was nominated for a Juno Award in 2005. In a later review for Allmusic stated, "[..] the album has all the elements necessary for a pop classic." . In 2010, the album was released in the UK as Extended Edition with 12 pieces of bonus material, published in 2014 Guthrie a remastered edition , the one More, Now Than Ever baptized Remix contained in the album as bonus material.

Guthrie did not release another album for almost eight years. Except for the short-lived side project Human Highway in 2008, he fell silent as an alternative musician.

In the meantime Guthrie started a new musical career and began producing soundtracks, all in the style of electronic music. Works for films and computer games proved to be particularly successful. In 2009 he produced the soundtrack for the feature film When We Were Boys . In 2011 the indie game Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP was released for iOS, whose soundtrack came from him. The game received critical acclaim, often highlighting Guthrie's soundtrack, which was later released separately. His soundtrack for the documentary Indie Game: The Movie was released the following year , which was also very well received by critics.

In parallel, Guthrie re-published his older works and self-published smaller works such as Children of the Clone (2011), Free-P (2012) or Corporeal (2013), all in the typical electronica style of his soundtracks. He created Corporeal based on the Playstation game Sound Shapes , for which, in addition to Beck and Deadmau 5, he also supplied the sound source material . At the same time, the long phase of his silence in the alternative scene ended: in 2013 the album Takes Time , which had already begun in 2007, was released , with which Guthrie reappeared as a singer-songwriter and which stylistically tied in with Now, More Than Ever . The album, which focused on time and age, was nominated for the Canadian Polaris Music Prize that same year .

Other Projects

The record label Three Guts Records , active from 1999 to 2005 , was also operated by Guthrie. In addition to the debut of Royal City and albums by Guthrie himself, the Constantines , Gentleman Reg and Oneida also released there .

Together with Nicholas Thorburn , he founded the side project Human Highway in 2008 , which debuted in the same year with the album Moody Motorcycle . The contact arose when Guthrie was temporarily a member of Thorburn's Band Islands .
