Jim Wetherington

William J. "Jim" Wetherington is a retired American police officer and politician .

Life

Wetherington attended high school in Campbellton , Florida . After graduating from high school, he joined the United States Army . There he served in the military police and was stationed at the Walter Reed Military Hospital in Washington, DC . In 1959 he joined the Columbus Police Department and became a patrol officer . During his professional career he was a sergeant , later a lieutenant , in the Traffic Division , then director of the Alcohol Safety Action Project and finally commander of the Patrol / Detective Division . In 1981 Wetherington was named Chief of Police of the Columbus Police Department by Mayor Harry C. Jackson . He stayed that way until 1995. During his time as chief of police, he helped found the Georgia Law Enforcement Command College at Columbus State University , part of the University System of Georgia .

In 1995, he was appointed a member of the State Board of Pardons and Paroles by Governor Zell Miller and served for three years, two of them as vice chairman. In 1999 he was appointed Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Corrections by Governor Roy Barnes . He held this post for four years.

In November 2006 he was elected mayor of Columbus and was able to prevail against the previous incumbent Robert Poydasheff . His inauguration took place on January 2, 2007. In the next mayoral elections on November 30, 2010, he decided not to run for a second term. On January 3, 2011, he was replaced by Teresa Tomlinson .

Wetherington holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice Administration from Columbus State University and a Masters of Science degree from Georgia State University .

Wetherington is married with three children. In 1994 he was named Police Chief of the Year by the Georgia Police Chiefs Association and the Georgia Bar Association's Liberty Bell Award . In 2012, an interstate on Interstate 185 was named after him.
