Jimmy Carl Black (born February 1, 1938 in El Paso , Texas , USA as James Inkanish Jr .; † November 1, 2008 in Siegsdorf , Germany ) was an American drummer and singer . He was best known with the Zappa band The Mothers of Invention and the film 200 Motels .

Life

Jimmy Carl Black has played the piano since he was six . In 1958 he started playing drums. He recorded his first single in 1962 with the group The Keys . In 1964 he founded the group Soul Giants with Roy Estrada . In 1965, Ray Collins and shortly afterwards Frank Zappa joined the band, which after several renaming finally became known as The Mothers of Invention . With this band Black completed many live appearances and was involved in eight albums. He also worked on three Zappa solo projects, the Zappa-produced albums Permanent Damage by the groupie band GTO’s and Trout Mask Replica by Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band . Because of his Indian origins, Black was known as "The Indian of the Group".

In 1970 Black founded the group Geronimo Black , in which Bunk Gardner also played and released two albums. In 1971, he appeared in Frank Zappa's film 200 Motels as the lonesome cowboy Burt together with musicians such as Ringo Starr , Mark Volman , Howard Kaylan and Keith Moon in front of the camera.

After various musical projects, he began in 1980 to play songs by the Mothers of Invention and his own compositions with the band The Grandmothers . Ten albums were released until the group re-formed in 2002 without Black's participation. Jimmy Carl Black also appeared with the Zappa cover band The Muffin Men , including at the 2003 Zappanale in Bad Doberan .

After the death of his first wife, with whom he has six children, he married a German woman whom he had met on a tour of Germany. Monika and Jimmy Carl Black lived in Siegsdorf in Upper Bavaria since the 1990s .

For the last two years of his life, filmmakers Sigrun Köhler and Wiltrud Baier followed Jimmy Carl Black with their cameras in his new Bavarian homeland and during his appearances. The film Where's the beer and when do we get paid? came to theaters in summer 2013.

Jimmy Carl Black died of cancer on November 1, 2008 in Siegsdorf .
