Ray Collins (musician)

Ray Collins (born November 19, 1936 - December 24, 2012 ) was an American singer who became known through his work with The Mothers of Invention .

Life

Ray Collins grew up in Pomona , California , the son of a police officer. He left high school to get married. He began his musical career as a singer in Doo Wop groups in the Los Angeles area , such as Little Julian Herrera & the Tigers , in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Collins wrote the song Memories of El Monte with Frank Zappa for the band The Penguins .

In 1964 he founded the group The Soul Giants with drummer Jimmy Carl Black , bassist Roy Estrada and Frank Zappa , which became the Mothers of Invention under Zappa's direction . Ray Collins was the lead singer on early Mothers of Invention albums such as Freak Out! , Absolutely Free and Cruising with Ruben & the Jets . He also contributed to other Zappa projects through the mid-1970s. Collins lived in Claremont, California until his death at the age of 76 . In 1992 he presented the compact cassette Love Songs under his own name .
