Jimmy Hood

James "Jimmy" Hood (born May 16, 1948 in Lesmahagow ; † December 4, 2017 ) was a Scottish politician .

Life

Hood was born in Lesmahagow in 1948 as the son of the miner William Hood and his wife Bridget . He attended Lesmahagow High School and Coatbridge College and then took a training position as a technician in coal mining. Hood later studied politics, economic relations and economics at Nottingham University . Hood first took a job in mining engineering in Scotland and then moved to Ollerton Colliery in Nottinghamshire , England , where he worked for 19 years. At the age of 24 he was elected the youngest chairman of the National Union of Mineworkers in Nottinghamshire.

In January 1967, Hood married Marion McCleary . The couple had two children and two grandchildren. On December 4, 2017, Hood's death at the age of 69 became known.

Political career

In 1973 Hood was elected to the Nottinghamshire Regional Council for the Labor Party . Hood first appeared in the 1987 general election to national elections. He ran in the constituency of Clydesdale , which Judith Hart represented since 1983, which no longer ran for these elections. Hood won the mandate safely and subsequently moved into the British House of Commons for the first time . Hood defended his mandate in the 1992 , 1997 and 2001 elections that followed .

At the end of the term, Hood's Clydesdale constituency was dissolved. For the general election in 2005 , he ran for the constituency of Lanark and Hamilton East , one of the successor constituencies. As in the 2010 general election , Hood kept his mandate safe. After the SNP gained massive votes in the 2015 general election , he left the House of Commons. The mandate went to the SNP candidate Angela Crawley .
