James "Jimmy" Lawrence (born February 16, 1879 in Partick, † November 21, 1934 in Glasgow) was a Scottish football player and coach. He played between 1904 and 1922 in the position of goalkeeper for the English club Newcastle United FC , with which he won four titles. In 1911 he played once for the Scottish national football team . From 1925 to 1931 he was a coach at the German club Karlsruher FV .

career

Jimmy Lawrence originally played in his hometown for Partick Athletic and Glasgow Perthshire. Occasionally during this time he also represented the first division club Hibernian Edinburgh in the Scottish capital, their goalkeeper Harry Rennie .

In 1904 he was signed by the English first division club Newcastle United FC , where he remained until 1922. In these 18 years he was a total of 432 times in the league and 64 times in the cup for the north-east of England between the posts, which is a club record for each player of the club. This record would probably have been even higher if gaming had not been suspended between 1915 and 1919 due to the First World War .

He made his debut in October 1904 in a 2-0 home win over Manchester City FC . In the first season he won the English football championship with the club, which was also respectfully known as the Edwardian Masters in that era - the first title in the club's history. Further championships followed in 1907 and 1909, and Newcastle won the Cup in 1910 . Newcastle United defeated it in the finals in Goodison Park from Liverpool for a 1: 1 draw in a replay to Barnsley FC 2: 0th In addition, he reached the final of the competition with the club in 1905, 1906, 1908 and 1911. On the other hand, his time at Newcastle also saw the club's record home defeat when Newcastle lost 9-1 to local rivals Sunderland AFC in December 1908 . The goalkeeper, who is famous for his consistency, played his last game for Newcastle in April 1922 with a 2-1 home defeat by Bradford City AFC . Lawrence was 43 years old at the time. In the eyes of many, he is considered the best goalkeeper in Newcastle United history.

In April 1911, Jimmy Lawrence played his only international match when he was in the British Home Championship at Goodison Park in the 1-1 draw against England in goal. England secured the title with the result.

After the end of his playing career, he coached the then English second division club South Shields FC for several months in 1924 and then the then financially troubled club Preston North End FC , which populated the lower half of the table at that time. At the end of the season, the club rose as 21st and penultimate in what was then Division II .

In 1925 he moved to the German champions of 1910, the Karlsruhe FV , where he stayed until 1931. He won the championship of Württemberg / Baden with the KFV in 1925/26 and the title of Baden master in 1928, 1929 and 1931. This qualified the traditional club in those years to participate in the games for the southern German championship, but participation in the German championship was no longer achieved.

He later returned to Scotland and became president of Stranraer FC in 1933 , which at the time was not yet part of the Scottish league. In 1934 he died there of a heart condition in office.

Others

Jimmy Lawrence was also politically active and played an important role in building the Association Football Players Union of which he was president from 1921 to 1922. The AFPU later became today's Professional Footballers' Association .

In February 1913 he married Barbara Murray in Newcastle, but within two months she had passed away. Appendicitis was given as the cause of death at that time.
