The PZL Bielsko SZD-56 Diana is a single-seat high-performance glider manufactured by the Polish manufacturer PZL Bielsko . The gliding index is 114.
history
There are two variants of the SZD 56. Of the first version, designed by Bogumił Bereś and called Diana , only four were built. The first prototype of the aircraft, made of fiber composites such as aramid (Kevlar), carbon or glass fiber reinforced plastics, was completed in August 1989. Then the static testing began and on November 29, 1990 a prototype with the factory designation X-147 was flown in by Jacek Zak. The Diana was the first Polish glider to be equipped with a sidestick instead of a central control stick. In 2005, the Diana 2 was followed by the current series version, which is certified according to JAR 22 .
At the beginning of 2017, the Polish manufacturer Avionic announced that it would restart series production of the Diana 2. First, a version with an optional FES system is to be produced. For the future it is planned to develop an improved version with an optimized fuselage, which should also accommodate a motor, as well as a new elevator and winglets. A variant is also planned for the 18 m class and the 13.5 m class.

In addition to the sidestick, the Diana 2 has other special design features: the wings can be dismantled, but are not connected according to the tongue and fork principle, but rather attached to spars that are part of the fuselage. Thus, a lighter construction is presumably achieved. The empty weight of 182 kg can be increased to a maximum take-off weight of 500 kg in flight. At 240 kg, the water ballast tanks can contain 60 kg more ballast than the empty weight of the machine. This results in a wide range of surface loads for the Diana 2 between 28 and 58 kg / m².

The current version SZD-56.1 Diana 2 is very successful at competitions. Although only a few models have been built and very few participants take part in the Diana 2, it has always been at the forefront of all international competitions since it was released in 2005:
