The SZD-6x Nietoperz ( German  bat ) is a Polish tailless glider .

history

The aircraft was intended as an experimental aircraft to research different rudder arrangements for flying wings . The designers were Władysław Nowakowski and Justyn Sandauer. The aircraft was built in conventional wood construction, only the outer wing flaps were made of metal. The outer flaps were expandable and could act as ailerons , airbrakes or rudder . The middle and inner wing flaps could be hinged as elevons or separately as elevators , ailerons or as flaps.

On January 12, 1951, the pilot Adam Zientek carried out a first attempt at take-off behind a PWS-26 in Katowice . The chosen control arrangement turned out to be unfavorable and the machine got longitudinal oscillations (PIO) and was damaged. The first successful flight took place on February 2, 1951 with the pilot A. Zientek. He also found that the plane was extremely difficult to control. However, the control kinematics was designed from the outset in such a way that all control surfaces could be assigned and superimposed different functions. Different control variants were tested.

  • Height control through all four inner wing flaps. Aileron control and airbrakes through the spreading flaps and rudder control through the central rudder.
  • Fixed rudder, expansion flaps additionally overlaid with the function of the rudder pedals.
  • Dismantled vertical stabilizer, which, however, led to dangerous flight conditions.

Eventually an acceptable combination of controls was found that came close to the first version. The aircraft was used for further tests from 1952 to 1964 and was also used on various flying days for aerobatics . However, most of the pilots were not very impressed with the flight characteristics, so the aircraft was handed over to the Aviation Museum in Krakow .
