The PZL Bielsko SZD-51-1 Junior is a single-seat glider in GRP construction. The aircraft has a two-part wing with a spar. The spoiler plates (airbrakes) are only arranged on the top of the wing. The fuselage has a supporting tubular steel frame in the middle part. Rudder pedals and backrest are adjustable. The antenna is built into the vertical stabilizer as standard. Only the rudder is covered with fabric. The rudder is controlled via ropes, all other rudders are operated via linkage. Four people are required for setting up and dismantling, and only two when using supports. After the first solo flights on the two-seater, the junior is often used for single-seater training. It is characterized by good slow flight characteristics and is very good-natured in flight behavior. It is therefore well suited for the first cross-country flights or for beginners' competitions. The aircraft is approved for simple aerobatics and can be equipped for high-altitude and cloud flights.

history

Between 1973 and 1974, the Osrodek Badawczo-Rozwojowy (Research and Development Center) in Bielsko-Biała created the SZD-47 “Club” project, which did not get beyond the development stage. In 1979 the designer Stanislaw Zientek took up this concept again and developed the SZD-51-0 from it. Their first flight took place on December 31, 1980. In the series, the fuselage was modified. A total of 255 copies were built, 153 of them for export. The SZD-51-1 “Junior” is being built under license in Brazil.
