The PZL Bielsko SZD-43 Orion is a Polish high-performance glider .

history

The SZD-43 was designed in the test facility for gliders (Szybowcowy Zakład Doświadczalny, SZD) in Bielsko for the 1972 gliding world championships in Vršac , Yugoslavia . Project planning work began in December 1970 under the direction of Jan Knapik and Tadeusz Labuci and was completed in just three months. The subsequent construction phase lasted eight months.

The construction was carried out in mixed construction. The front fuselage is made of wood, the rear part of a metal tube. The surface was covered with a glass epoxy layer. The wings with automatic air brakes were based on the Cobra and the elevator and rudder units were taken over by Jantar , which was in parallel development at about the same time. The main wheel can be braked and retracted and the cockpit canopy is made in one piece.

On December 30, 1971, the test pilot Adam Zientek carried out the first flight, after which some changes were made to the type. The test series could be ended in time and the Polish national team took part in the world championship with the only two Orions built ( SP-2634 and SP-2635 ). The planes caused quite a stir there as the construction had not been announced to the public. The Polish glider pilot Jan Wróblewski finally won the world championship with the Orion. The SZD-43 with the registration number SP-2635 can be seen today in the Aviation Museum in Krakow .
